POE FAMILY PAPERS

Mss 242, the Poe Family Papers, documents the lives of Harris (H. T., or "Hal") Tinker Poe; his son, Harry Tinker Poe, Jr.; and his daughter, Isadora R. Poe. H. T. Poe (1856-1931) played an important role in the development of Greenville, SC because of his involvement in the city's public utilities, such as the Paris Mountain Water Company, the Greenville Gas and Electric Light and Power Company, and the Greenville Traction Company (the citys first street railway). Correspondence and financial records for all three businesses dating from the late 19th to early 20th century are part of the collection.

The material relating to Harry T. Poe (1882-1942) centers around his work on the Santee-Cooper Project. In addition to the scrapbook highlighted in this presentation, Poe compiled two binders of "general information" about the Project. These consist of budgets, charts and diagrams, correspondence, maps, memos, orders, reports, and other material for the period 1937-1940--with most of the items dated 1939--relating to all aspects of the Project. Also included is a copy of the c.1944 budget memorandum report on the Project provided by Santee Cooper. Isadora R. Poes papers are mainly concerned with her investments, especially in local textile mills such as Woodside Mills.

The Poe Family Papers are important for documenting the Santee-Cooper Power and Navigation Project; the Poe family; the history of Greenville, SC; the economic development of South Carolina, especially in the central and northwest portions of the state; and the history of South Carolina public utilities in general. The Papers are available for use in Special Collections--see the home page for information on hours, directions, rules for using materials, etc.
